Queen Maya Angelou

The first time I read the poem “Phenomenal Woman” I was a senior in High School preparing for a pageant. A few of the older woman wanted me to read the poem as my performance piece but to much protest of my mentor she found another poem I performed. But, I knew I was a Phenomenal Woman.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

From that day on I would come across works by Maya Angelou, I would hear her speak and I knew that one day I wanted to be just as amazing as she was. Now she is resting in power, my question is “Who do we have?” we, being us young writers wanting to tell the world our stories, inspire and be who we are.

We are love and love liberates.
